Is Your Kitchen Faucet Wasting Water?

20101532_sSaving water is an important thing to do all year around. But, this time of year is when many people set their intentions for the New Year. And, setting the intention is the best way to ensure that you actually do it.

Many people like to set resolutions and make goals that they will work towards during the coming months. If you are in the habit of doing this, make sure to add a goal to improve your water use behaviors.

A single-family home uses several hundred gallons of water per day. This is done through bathing, grooming, and cleaning activities. This means, that each member of your household has a real opportunity to save water several times per day.

If you are unsure how, here are some tips:

  • Check your plumbing for leaks. The best way to do this is to study your water meter. First, go to your water meter and write down the number that is displayed. Then, make sure that no one uses water for the next 15 to 20 minutes. After the time has passed, go to the meter and write down the number that is displayed. If the numbers are different, you likely have a leak. Call your plumber and make sure to tell him or her the study that you did.
  • Install new fixtures. Water-saving fixtures have become popular in recent years and come in a variety of looks and styles. Check your local home improvement store for low-flow showerheads and faucets. Now is a good time of year to shop for these as many retailers have sales.
  • Limit the garbage disposal. Consider adding a composting set up to your list of projects for 2016. This is a great way to reduce the amount that you use your garbage disposal, and thus reduce the amount of water that you use. Not to mention you will have a great resource of vitamins and nutrients for your garden when the spring planting season arrives.

Add these tips and more to your list of 2016 resolutions. Each of these tips will save a significant amount of water on its own, but combine them and you will notice a significant impact on your monthly utility bills.
