What to Do in a Potential Gas Emergency

Gas leaks emit dangerous gases into your home, causing fires, explosions, health issues, and even death. Certain gas leaks can be identified by many signs, such as hissing sounds, strong odors, or even flames in the case of an accidental ignition. Though gas leaks aren’t common, they are unpredictable and can cause serious harm. Because of this, it’s important to be prepared so you know what to do if you experience gas emergency.

What to Do in a Gas Emergency

The first thing you should do when you suspect a gas leak is to evacuate the area. Depending on the type of gas, it may be harmful to humans and can cause problems like dizziness, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. Some gases are also explosive and can ignite from the tiniest of sparks. As a result, it’s best to leave the area as quickly as possible.

After you have safely evacuated the area in question, get to an area where you can no longer smell gas. Once you’re safe, call emergency services to report a gas leak as soon as possible. Stay away from the area until authorities tell you to return.

What Not to Do in a Gas Emergency

Unfortunately, many people try to address the issue themselves instead of exiting the area and alerting the professionals. Do not try to locate the source of the leak and instead focus on leaving the area. Leave finding the leak to the professionals.

Do not attempt to start or stop any of your appliances, even if they are currently running. Avoid spending extra time in the area and evacuate. In addition, do not use any electrical devices, including your cell phone, until you are far away from the leak. As mentioned, even the smallest spark can cause an explosion.
