Plunging a toilet is not as difficult as you might think. In fact, with the right knowledge and tools, you can plunge a toilet in no time.
Plunging Techniques
There are two plunging techniques you can use to plunge your toilet–the quick plunge or the slow plunge. The quick plunge is used to plunge a toilet that has a slow or low flow rate. The slow plunge technique is used for toilets with high flow rates.
Quick Plunge
For a quick plunge, hold the plunger vertically and push it down quickly. This will create a vacuum and will suck the water out of the toilet bowl. If the toilet bowl is full, it will take a few plunges.
Slow Plunge
For a slow plunge, hold the plunger at an angle and push it down slowly. The slower you plunge, the more water you will draw up and out of the toilet.
Turning Off the Water
Turning the water off is a quick way to keep your toilet from overflowing if you can maneuver the handle fast enough. Locate the valve behind the toilet. If the water in the toilet bowl is too close to the top rim, or if you cannot thrust the plunger into the water without splashing it out or overflowing, turn the water off. Wait a few minutes for the water to go down. It will eventually empty from the bowl. Then, you can dislodge the blockage from the drain.
Success!
You will know the plunge worked when the toilet flushes itself. You can then turn the water back on, wait for the water level to rise back to normal, and attempt to flush with the handle. If your efforts are successful, the toilet will flush as normal. If not, the water will start to rise again, and you will need to repeat the process.
