How to Properly Plunge a Toilet

Plunging a toilet might seem intimidating, but with the right approach and tools, it’s a task anyone can handle. Follow these steps to clear a clog quickly and efficiently.

The Proper Plunging Methods

There are two main plunging techniques you can use: the quick plunge and the slow plunge. The technique you choose depends on how the toilet is clogged.

Quick Plunge

For a quick plunge, hold the plunger upright and press it down forcefully. This action creates a vacuum effect, pulling water and debris back out of the toilet bowl. You may need to repeat this motion several times if the bowl is full of water.

Slow Plunge

For the slow plunge method, position the plunger at a slight angle and press down gently. This technique draws water up more gradually, making it effective for larger clogs. The slower, controlled movement helps loosen blockages without creating excess splashing.

Shut Off the Water to Prevent Overflow

If the water level in the toilet bowl is dangerously high, you may need to turn off the water supply to prevent an overflow. Locate the valve behind the toilet and shut it off. This will stop more water from entering the bowl, allowing time for the water level to drop before you attempt to plunge again.

Signs of a Successful Plunge

You’ll know you’ve successfully cleared the blockage when the toilet flushes properly and the water drains as expected. After the plunge, turn the water back on, wait for the bowl to refill, and flush the toilet again to ensure the clog is gone. If the water rises instead of draining, you may need to repeat the plunging process.
