Tips for Protecting Your Plumbing Throughout Winter and Spring

We’re all looking forward to spring, but there is still plenty of wintry weather ahead. These colder, wetter seasons can be rough on our plumbing systems, and the spring thaw can reveal unknown damage to frozen pipes. Your family likely spends more time indoors throughout the winter than any other season, and this can put a lot of stress on your plumbing system. You’ll want to address any issues before the weather starts to turn warmer.

Tips for the Last Few Months of Winter

  • Prevent Pipes from Freezing – We’ve made it through the heart of winter, but the weather can still turn cold unexpectedly. A frozen pipe is at risk of bursting, especially if the temperature change was drastic and rapid. A burst pipe can be costly to repair and almost always results in additional property damage and an overwhelming mess. Even if a frozen pipe doesn’t burst completely, it may rupture and leak. Keep any outdoor water lines (or other unused water lines) drained and closed until winter has completely passed and you can be sure of consistently warm weather. You should also consider insulating any pipes in cold areas of your home if you haven’t already done so.
  • Schedule an Inspection of Your Water Heater – From long winter showers to getting that springtime mud out of your favorite jeans, you rely on your water heater every single day to provide hot water when you need it. This time of year is perfect for getting in any maintenance or repairs you may need, or to think about replacing an older water heater.
  • Clear Your Disposal and Drains – The winter is jam-packed full of holidays and that means larger meals and more food waste. The winter months can put your garbage disposal to the test. This is the perfect time to have your drains inspected to ensure you are not at the risk for clogs. The spring thaw can make issues with backed-up drains even worse, so put drains and wastewater lines at the top of your list.
